The short answer
Separate winter wheels can simplify seasonal changes, but you will need to buy the wheels and store the unused set. Ask one installer to quote both options for your car.
Compare the two approaches
| Use the same wheels | Use separate winter wheels |
|---|---|
| The seasonal tires are removed from and mounted onto your existing wheels. | Each seasonal set stays mounted on its own wheels. |
| Ask about mounting, balancing, and appointments for each change. | Ask about wheel-set changes, initial assembly, sensors, and storage. |
| You still need somewhere for the unused tires. | You need somewhere for the unused wheel-and-tire assemblies. |
Have the same installer describe both options for your vehicle. Ask which items are included, which recur, and which are charged separately. A package may arrive mounted and balanced; confirm what the specific order includes. Tire Rack explains its winter packages.
Ask for a complete quote
Ask which of these items your car needs and whether they are included:
- Tires, wheels if chosen, and compatible mounting hardware.
- Initial assembly and balancing.
- Seasonal installation or tire remounting.
- Any sensors, parts, or tire-pressure monitoring setup required for the vehicle.
- Storage, transport, taxes, and other service charges.
Separate one-time purchases from services you will pay for every season. Compare both options over the same number of winters, using the same storage arrangement. That makes it easier to see whether the extra wheels are worth the initial expense for you.
Check wheel compatibility before you buy
Diameter and bolt pattern are only part of the check. Brake clearance, load capacity, wheel geometry, and mounting hardware also matter. Tire Rack explains the checks it makes for each vehicle.
Choose the storage space now
Michelin recommends a clean, cool, dry indoor location away from sun, heat, and ozone sources. Clean and dry the tires first. Its guidance distinguishes tires mounted on wheels, which can be stacked or hung, from unmounted tires, which should stand upright. Follow your tire manufacturer’s specific instructions. Read Michelin’s storage guidance.
Measure the available space before you order. If using a storage service, ask how collection, identification, condition checks, and return appointments work. Put the spring changeover reminder in the same place as your autumn appointment.
